Betty Sue Mathis, a beloved resident of Hawkins, TX, has passed away on March 4, 2024, at the age of 91. Betty was born on November 21, 1932 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Richard and Ruth Scearce.
After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Betty went on to work for a state school in Oklahoma for many years as a sign language interpreter. She lived in Oklahoma most of her life before moving to Hawkins with her daughter in 2020.
Betty was known for her passion for sewing and quilting, her love for fishing, and her adventurous spirit that led her to travel all over the world. Her grandkids fondly referred to her as "Grandmother” and she enjoyed spending quality time with her family.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Ruth Scearce; one son, Steven Walker; a brother, Johnny Scearce; and husband, Vester Mathis.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Gary Walker and wife Pheobe of Oklahoma City, OK, and Vicki Hendryx and husband Scott of Hawkins, TX; her sister, Patricia “Pat” Neighbors of Crowley, TX; four grandchildren, Kevin Hendryx, Shane Walker, Kelsey Walker, and Colton Walker; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
