David Henry Nichols, known affectionately as "Pawpaw", passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Mineola on June 25, 2024. He was born on November 2, 1949, in Mineola, Texas, to Dewey Henry Nichols and Ruth Alma (Neighbors) Nichols.

David led a fulfilling life filled with notable achievements. He dedicated 25 years of his career working for Freightliners in the CAD department in Portland, Oregon. After retiring in 1998, he returned to his hometown of Mineola. David also served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War Era.

David's passion for life extended beyond his professional pursuits. He enjoyed various hobbies and interests such as fishing and woodworking, particularly building birdhouses. He loved to travel, particularly to Mountain View, Arkansas. He enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, and birdwatching. Despite being colorblind, he loved to “lose at dominos”, while playing Mexican train with his family. He loved cameras and photography, focusing mainly on capturing the beauty of birds and flowers. Additionally, he enjoyed tending to the flowerbeds with his wife, Sherry.

Among his proudest accomplishments was his commitment to being sober for 24 years, and his baptism as a teenager at First Christian Church in Mineola.

David is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Nichols of Mineola; five children, Zachary Davin Nichols of Gladstone, Oregon, Joshua David Nichols (wife Molly) of Palmer, Alaska, Brandon Carl McMahon (wife Jennifer) of Ovilla, Texas, Phillip Addison McMahon (wife Rachel) of Forney, Texas, and Adam Blake McMahon (wife Brittany) of Mineola; one brother, Jackie Bob Nichols (wife Mary) of Mountain Home, Arkansas; thirteen grandchildren; and many friends and members of the Alcoholics Anonymous Chapter in Mineola.
