Herman Harbuck

Herman Douglas Harbuck, of Quitman, passed away peacefully in his sleep September 16, 2024 at the age of 87.

Herman was born in Irving, TX, on March 14, 1937, to the late Claude C. Harbuck and Mary Alice (Mackey) Harbuck. Living most of his life in Quitman, Herman graduated from Quitman High School in 1955. While in high school, Herman kept himself busy with basketball, baseball, and track, as well as being a 4-year member (and 3-year officer) of Future Farmers of America. His high school activities didn’t keep him too busy, though, to meet his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Theresa Jan Matheson. Herman and Theresa were married on April 6, 1958, later adding two children to their life together: their son, Tom and daughter, Terri. Herman and Theresa enjoyed each other’s company in marriage for almost 58 years, until Theresa’s passing in February 2016.

Not only was Herman a Jack-of-all-trades, but he was also a Master-of-all trades. His hobbies included welding, woodworking, fishing, traveling to gun shows, and spending as much time as possible with his loving wife. He also had a passion for flying. Herman purchased his first plane, a Cessna, in 1987. He later sold this plane and purchased a Stearman. Herman and Theresa could be seen flying over “Grandma Matheson’s house” often. Herman mostly cherished spending time with his two grandsons, Todd and Kobie Wink. He enjoyed taking the two of them with him everywhere.

Herman is preceded in death by his parents, Claude C. and Mary Alice Harbuck; his wife, Theresa Harbuck; brother, Richard Earl Harbuck; infant brother, Claude Wayne Harbuck and brother-in-law, Doyle Nelson.

Survivors include his son, Tom Harbuck of Chandler, TX; daughter, Terri Wink and her husband Kevin, of Katy, TX; two grandsons, Todd Wink and wife Keely, of San Antonio, TX, and Kobie Wink and wife Imma, of Katy, TX; five great-grandchildren, Korbin, Kaison and Kymber Wink of San Antonio, TX, and Addison and Barrett Wink of Katy, TX; sister, JoAnna Nelson, of Quitman; sister-in-law, Nancy Harbuck of Mineola; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Herman will be missed by all.

A funeral service to honor the life of Herman Harbuck is scheduled for 11:00AM, on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Lowe-Gardner Funeral Home with Brother Fred Morrow officiating. A graveside service will follow at Quitman City Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM.

Serving as pallbearers are Russell Nelson, Adam Nelson, Ben Nelson, Chad Harbuck, Liam Harbuck, and John Lewis Campbell.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in his honor to either Faith Baptist Church in Quitman (P.O. Box 1495 Quitman, TX 75783) or The American Cancer Society
