Jack T. Neel, a beloved community leader and mentor, passed peacefully at his home on September 19, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on March 4, 1929, in Lamkin, Texas, to the late John Paul Neel and Carrie Mae (Eubank) Neel, Jack dedicated much of his life to serving others as both a pharmacist and a caring provider for his family, friends, and community.
Jack owned Neel's Pharmacy in Quitman, Texas (the capital of Wood County, ya know!) for 36 years, establishing a reputation for kindness and dedication. His commitment to his profession was carried from his educational pursuit, as he graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1951. Jack took great pride in passing the state pharmacy board exam and created a welcoming environment for anyone who entered his doors.
In addition to his career, Jack was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, embodying a sense of duty and service that extended well beyond his military years. He was known for his warm spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand, exemplifying his belief in quietly assisting those in need.
Jack cherished the time spent with his family, making memories on vacations with loved ones, and RVing across the country. He had a love for adventure, enjoying time at the lake, time in the mountains, and the many miles traveling down the highway. He was also a devoted fan of the Texas Longhorns, cheering them on with enthusiasm and pride, which was evident to all who knew him!
Jack’s legacy includes not only his professional accomplishments but also the values he instilled in his children. He took immense pride in raising good children and serving as an example of integrity and compassion throughout his life.
He will be remembered for his kind demeanor, his generous heart, and his unwavering support for his community. Jack was involved in many organizations in Wood County, including The Rotary Club, Scenic Association, Dogwood Committee, Quitman ISD School Board, Christmas Sharing, as well as a Sunday School Teacher at First United Methodist Church of Quitman.
Jack’s contributions to those around him will surely leave a lasting impact, and the hole left by his absence will be an impossible one to fill.
Jack is greeted in Heaven by his parents, John Paul Neel and Carrie Mae Neel; brother, Bill Neel; son, Gary Neel; and grandson, Justin Herriage.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years, Pat Neel of Quitman; six children, Jamie Caldwell of Albuquerque, NM, Carla Moore of Dallas, Tina Chamness and husband Al of Bullard, Kim Bell of Quitman, Steven Neel and wife Kelly of Colleyville, and Stacy Lennon and husband Chad of Alba; seven grandchildren, Carrie, Chris, Melissa, Megan, Carter, Clayton, and Reese; eight great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ryder, Sydnie, Dasha, Jack, Josiah, Adalynn, Hallie, and Addison; nieces and nephews, Ava, Roddy, Paul, Joanna, and Becca; and many extended family members and numerous friends.
Funeral service for Jack Neel is scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, September 23, 2024 at First United Methodist Church Quitman. Graveside service will follow at Quitman City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday evening, September 22, 2024 at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations.
In this time of remembrance, we celebrate the remarkable life of Jack T. Neel, a man who lived fully and shared generously with those fortunate enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Jack to the Forever Young Activity Center or the First United Methodist Church Quitman.
