Funeral service for John Edward Long, 78, of Quitman, is scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Lowe Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremiah Thomas officiating. Committal will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
John Edward Long was born May 30, 1939 at home in Lewisville, Texas to Mike Allen and Hattie Christine (Stone) Long. John served his country proudly in the US Marine Corps. He was a Quitman resident for 38 years, moving from the Dallas area. John worked as a dragline operator and always loved tinkering with cars and his old tractor. In his younger years he enjoyed racing cars. John and his wife, Ann, would have celebrated their 60th anniversary in September.
John went to be with the Lord May 28, 2018.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mike Allen and Hattie Christine Long; son, Timothy Long; and his sister, Frances Thompson.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Ann Long of Quitman; son, Matthew Long and wife Jeanne of Holden, Missouri; daughter, Mary Asbill and husband Jerry of Pickton; brother, Sam Long of Quitman; three sisters, Mary Binion and husband Barry of The Colony, Wanda Howell and husband James of Dangerfield, and Peggy Bryan of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Deidra Busby, Justin Asbill, Zack Asbill, and Blake Campbell; five great grandchildren, Seth Busby, Kendall Morris, Jace Busby, Audrey True, and Seth Campbell; three great great grandchildren, Judd Asbill, Ember Marrow, and Kyrie Campbell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Serving as pallbearers are Benjie Thompson, Steve Thompson, Greg Thomas, Price Thomas, Johnny Thomas, and Luther Hogan.
