Phillip Lloyd Hughes Jr., a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away August 27, 2024, at his home. Phillip was born on October 18, 1946, in Yates Center, Kansas to Phillip Lloyd Hughes and Edna Hughes.
Phillip spent the past 11 wonderful years in Quitman, having moved from McGregor, TX. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Texas Tech University and later obtained his Master's Degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In May of 1998, Phillip married Trella Hughes, with whom he shared many cherished moments. He retired from a successful career as an Aerospace Engineer 12 years ago and enjoyed farming on his Quitman property, where he took joy in raising Hereford cattle.
A dedicated member of the Liberty Methodist Church in Quitman, he found peace in his faith alongside his church family.
Phillip had a passion for watching Formula One racing and cheering on both his Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, his greatest joy came from attending his grandkids' sporting events, where he was lovingly known as "Pops."
Phillip's memory will forever be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he loved.
Phillip is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Lloyd Hughes and Edna Hughes.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Trella Hughes; four children, Phillip Lloyd Hughes III (Trey) and wife Heather of Quitman, Heather Mercedes Hughes Agan and husband Chris of Tyler, David Wright of Gonzales, TX, and William Wright of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Carol Hughes of Tyler; and seven grandchildren, Kynlee, Brexton, Drake, Austyn, Elliot, Parker, and Taylor.
The family invites friends and loved ones to join in celebrating Phillip's life at his memorial service, which will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, September 1st at Liberty Methodist Church.
He will be missed so very much.
