Sgt. David Hayes

David Hayes, a resident of Quitman for 34 years, passed away on August 24, 2024, at his residence in Quitman. Born on June 3, 1948, in Plainview, TX to Charles and Barbara Hayes, David led a fulfilling life devoted to serving his community and serving the Lord.

David dedicated 15 years of his life as the Head Sergeant in the jail at the Wood County Sheriff’s Office before his retirement in 2013. He was the picture of a professional and was highly respected by his coworkers and the inmates. David was an active attendee of the First Assembly of God in Quitman, where his faith in the Lord shone brightly through his actions and words. David was a devoted Christian and even when he couldn’t attend church, he loved to talk about the Lord.

Before his tenure at the Wood County Jail, David worked as a manager at Atlo Stone, where he met his wife, Kay. Their love story began when she was his secretary. They later married on March 5, 1992, in Quitman.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, David was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and a former member of the Masonic Lodge.

David was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as spending time with his wife, Kay. Their companionship was cherished by all who knew them, and David's love for Kay was evident in every moment they spent together. David's warmth and kindness resonated with all who crossed his path, and his generous spirit will be deeply missed by his loved ones.

Though David may no longer walk among us, his memory will forever be etched in our hearts, a beacon of light guiding us through the darkness.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Barbara Hayes; and two brothers, Mike Hayes and Bill Hayes.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kay Hayes of Quitman; three children, Charles Hayes of Lake Texoma, April Bridger of Pennsylvania, and Eric Moore of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Lauren Cathey Chambers, Kayte Bridger, Melody Moore, and Zach Hayes; one great-granddaughter, Jones Blaire Chambers; good friend, Jon Thorwald; and many extended family members and friends.

Memorial service for Sgt. David Hayes will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the First Assembly of God in Quitman.
